Pirelli, the new tire supplier for MotoGP, has begun its delivery of the second batch of 80 tires to the teams of the competition. This phase of distribution occurs almost a year before the Italian company takes on the exclusive responsibility of supplying tires to the premier category of motorcycling.
Last autumn, Pirelli conducted an initial distribution that included five constructors: Ducati, Aprilia, Yamaha, Honda, and KTM. Notably, KTM was the first brand to take to the track with its 2027 prototype during a test in Jerez in early December, with rider Pol Espargaró at the helm.
As manufacturers progressed with testing their new 850 cc models and the new specification tires, the use of the first shipment of tires is running low, prompting Pirelli to initiate the distribution of this new batch.
Regulatory Changes and Preparations
Starting next season, MotoGP will introduce notable technical changes. The engine displacement will be reduced from 1000cc to 850cc, aerodynamics will be simplified, height adjustment mechanisms for vehicles will be banned, and starting devices will be prohibited, while a 100% sustainable fuel will be implemented. The highlight of this new regime will be the change of tire supplier, with Pirelli taking over from Michelin, which has held this role for a decade.
With the new regulations, manufacturers have begun developing prototypes, leveraging the first phase of compounds supplied by Pirelli since last year. In addition to KTM, Honda has also extended circuit testing, presenting its prototype at Sepang with rider Takaaki Nakagami. Yamaha has initiated its tests at the Iwata circuit before the year ends.
Although Ducati and Aprilia have not fully conducted official tests with their new models, it has been reported that they have requested the second batch of tires. Ducati conducted a test at Misano on April 13 with Michele Pirro, while the first complete tests are scheduled at Mugello. On the other hand, Aprilia has announced an initial test in Jerez with the participation of KTM and Yamaha.
With all these preparations, Honda will also be at Mugello to continue developing its models, with Nakagami leading the new generation of motorcycles.
