Oscar Piastri feels like he made two steps in F1 2024 in terms of his driving, but knows that there is still room for improvement especially in qualifying.
In pockets, McLaren’s Piastri posed a challenge to Lando Norris in F1 2024. But it was not consistent enough which is why the Australian ended up fourth to the Brit’s second in the drivers’ championship. He was also close to losing out fourth to Carlos Sainz, who was only two points behind.
In terms of the constructors’ championship, Piastri did enough to help McLaren win it. But for his personal goal of winning the drivers’ one day, the Australian knows where he has to work. He stepped up from his rookie season for certain, but he has to take the next step in his driving.
It sure will come with experience as others around him have done so. “It will be important, this season I feel like I made good steps forward, there is still room to go,” said Piastri to media. “The biggest one has been leaving a few too many positions on the table in qualifying.
“I don’t think I’ve ever really made life easy on myself in the races in that aspect. So that’s the big focus of the off-season, trying to get those last hundredths, last tenths. I feel like in all the other areas, I have been able to show what I’m capable of and also show that I have improved from my rookie season.
“So again, now it is just putting everything together because the gaps now are very small, or non-existent, so if I can get it all together, then I will be on my way. I think so, the big thing for me is that there’s not been many occasions or hard for me to understand where the times gone after qualifying. Like in Abu Dhabi, I knew immediately where it went wrong.
“Again, it is not really needing to find that extra step, it is just being able to be on top of my game everytime because whenever I have been on it, I have been good enough…it is not to say that there’s still room to get on top of that but the encouraging thing is that the potential is been there. The next step is realising the potential and realising it every weekend. And I think if I can do that every weekend then we are in for a fun season,” summed up Piastri.
