Sergio Perez steers himself away from his father’s homophobic comments made against Ralf Schumacher after the German’s views on the Mexican.
Having had a back and forth spat with former Haas chief Guenther Steiner over Mick Schumacher, this time R Schumacher found himself in another war of words after his comments regarding S Perez and his F1 future relating to Red Bull. The Mexican’s father – in retaliation – made homophobic remarks in an interview to ESPN.
Schumacher recently revealed about his identity which led to a back and forth with his former wife, where even their son David got into the thick of things. The German, having read Antonio Perez’s comments in the media, responded in rather restrained manner, citing a father’s love for his son.
“I would also stand 100% behind my son and try to help,” wrote Schumacher. “That’s what you do as a father. As far as style is concerned, I would approach things differently, but we know Mr Perez with all his emotions. That’s why I’m not angry with him. However, I believe results on the track would be the better argument.”
Meanwhile, Red Bull’s Perez distanced himself from his father’s comments. He doesn’t agree with them and terms it as a mistake, but he also noted that he can’t control what his father says. “I don’t agree with any of his comments,” he said to media when asked about the topic in the ongoing Las Vegas GP weekend.
“I think he did a mistake in that regard. I don’t share any of his views. But at the same time, I don’t control what my father has to say, I can only control what I say. It’s important as a sport to always show that whatever happens on track it always remains on track. That’s the way I see it and we should be always an example for the rest of the world.”
Schumacher is not the only pundit to raise questions on Perez and his F1 future with Red Bull. Several media personnel have made comments considering the lack of results for almost a year now. The Mexican is probably running the same spec as Max Verstappen in Las Vegas, but their weekend did not start on a good note.
They are chasing balance and feel less confident in one-lap pace than race pace. Perez, meanwhile, pushed aside the notion about his future once again when asked. He reckons Red Bull knows what they get of the Mexican, which is why they renewed his F1 contract earlier in the season.
“At the end of the day, the team knows exactly what they get out of me,” said Perez. “They have so much data and information. It’s as simple as that. There’s a reason why they renew me during the year as well. I think the season has been quite difficult in many ways.
“We took different paths. We started the season extremely strong but then we had quite a difficult period throughout the year. It’s just part of racing, and hopefully, we can close on a high these final three races,” summed up Perez, who most likely to finish eighth among the Top 8 drivers from the Top 4 teams in the 2024 F1 season.
