Oscar Piastri, recently linked to McLaren in Formula 1, has returned to his Australian roots to participate in a testing session with a car from the V8 Supercars category. On this occasion, the young driver shared the track with his compatriot and experienced driver, Cam Waters, who has 18 victories in the series.
Piastri, only 24 years old, acknowledged that in his childhood he had spent more time following V8 races than Formula 1 due to the time difference. “I used to watch drag races with my dad,” the driver remarked, highlighting his passion for motorsport.
A new experience at the wheel
The testing day was quite a challenge for Piastri, who confessed he was unsure how the new machine worked or what the circuit’s particularities were. After the first laps, his teammates encouraged him to “take more kerb,” and the driver eagerly accepted the challenge, bouncing over the comfortable sides of the Ford Mustang with a visible smile among spectators.
“It’s a lot of fun. It’s nice to drive something new. This is the first time I’ve driven a race car with a roof,” Piastri explained enthusiastically.
The latest results in F1
Piastri has managed to turn around his season start in Formula 1 with a notable second place at the Japanese Grand Prix, which took place at the Suzuka circuit. This race marked his first appearance of the year following an accident during the reconnaissance lap at the season opener in Australia and an electrical issue that hampered his hopes in China.
After the race, Piastri commented: “There was nothing more we could have done. We had a good start, the pace was right, and I managed the boost usage well during the race.” He also pointed out the importance of his strategy, despite lamenting the impact of the safety car on the race’s outcome. “I’m very satisfied with the performance I had and that of my team. We know we still have work to do to improve reliability.”
