Oscar Piastri, McLaren driver, has shared his perspective on his journey through the world of Formula 1 and how he managed his expectations throughout his career. Despite his current success, he has made it clear that reaching Formula 1 was never the main goal of his career.
In a recent interview, Piastri commented that, from a young age, he adopted a realistic approach, separating his dream of racing in F1 from his more tangible goals. Even at the age of 14, if someone had asked him if he thought he could become an F1 driver, he would have answered probably not.
The Australian driver explained that his aspiration was simply to become a professional driver. “My dream was to be an F1 driver, but my goal was to be a racing driver. I just wanted to race cars to make a living,” Piastri said. He added that he didn’t care whether it was in F1, a supercar in Australia, or in GT, as the most important thing was to participate in races.
A significant area for the young driver was the moment he arrived at Formula 2. At that point, he began to see F1 as a realistic possibility. “Until I reached F2 and started defending the title, I didn’t dare to turn the dream into a goal,” he commented.
Piastri acknowledges that his perception of achieving his goals has changed over time. As he got closer to his dream, he realized that he could actually fight for a place on the grid. “At that moment, I started to think that maybe we could make it a reality,” he concluded.
