Opel joins Formula E for the Gen4 era

Opel becomes the new representative of the Stellantis group in Formula E, replacing DS in this exciting stage that begins with the generation 4 of electric vehicles.

After a trajectory that dates back to 2015-16, DS Automobiles has decided to withdraw to focus on other initiatives, such as golf and the SailGP competition. This change opens the door for Opel, which partners with a new electric competition vehicle project that promises excitement and competition on the track.

Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, expressed his enthusiasm for Opel’s inclusion, highlighting its long history in motorsport and its bold image as a German brand. “Opel’s decision to participate shows the steps that automakers are taking in the transition toward electric mobility,” he commented.

This new stage means that Opel becomes the fifth major German brand to enter the competition, alongside Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche. However, Opel’s motorsport history, while less prominent than that of other constructors, includes significant victories such as the 1982 World Rally Championship with Walter Röhrl and the triumph at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2003.

The commitment to electric competition is reaffirmed with recent launches like the ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup. Starting from the 2026-27 season, the competition vehicles will be updated to Opel Mokka GSE Rally models, with more power and performance.

Florian Huettl, CEO of Opel, stated that this step toward Formula E represents a new challenge on their path to an electric future, while the first major showcase for the Opel GSE Formula E team will take place at the official Gen4 launch event at the Paul Ricard Circuit in April.
