The contract season in Formula 1 seemed to have reached its end, but a controversial claim about one of the few drivers without a contract has gained traction as the Mexican Grand Prix approaches.
The Haas F1 Team has already announced the departure of Esteban Ocon in favor of Rafael Camara, a prominent Formula 2 driver, for the upcoming season. However, an apparent delay in the confirmation of Oliver Bearman for 2027 has sparked speculation. Among the more extravagant claims, it has been mentioned that his management is demanding a sum of 6 million euros.
Industry sources have pointed out that this amount comes from an amateur blogger claiming to have inside information regarding F1’s economic matters. This claim has been amplified by other websites and influencers on social media without any verification. As with many of these stories, it has reached a point of repetition where it is accepted as truth.
The Haas team director, Ayao Komatsu, did not hide his irritation when asked about Bearman’s alleged demands during Friday’s FIA press conference. “Do you understand where this comes from? No? Exactly, neither do I,” Komatsu stated.
Komatsu continued expressing his perplexity: “I don’t know where it comes from. I’ve experienced this on more than one occasion during the season – there are people who say there’s no smoke without fire, but there are actually those who invent stories. What happened in Miami, for example, has no veracity. And those claiming to have insider information, it’s total nonsense.”
Furthermore, Komatsu referred to the origin of this 6 million euro figure, noting that he first saw it on Instagram. “I don’t understand why we engage in this absolute insanity. People don’t verify sources and just repeat stories,” he concluded.
According to information gathered by Motorsport.com, the delay in agreeing on terms is related to more complex issues. Sources from Ferrari have commented that Bearman’s management is seeking to secure a path towards a race car with the Scuderia for 2028, assuming Lewis Hamilton’s retirement.
With Camara’s promotion to the Haas team, Bearman now faces a direct competitor in case a vacancy arises at Ferrari. The longer this goes on, the more experience Camara gains. Komatsu highlighted Bearman’s potential, stating: “Ollie is showing incredible potential and we want to grow together. Our first goal is to have a competitive car for 2027, as we made mistakes in 2026 that affect this year.”
