Lando Norris has taken an important victory in the last race of FIA ??Formula 3 European championship at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. The Briton has carried out an intelligent race plus the abandonment of Günther, catapults him again for the championship battle. Eriksson started tenth has been second with Guanyu Zhou third.
Lando Norris (Carlin) was the author of the pole position but he didn’t start first due to a penalty. However, the Brit would make a fantastic start getting third position, then he quickly overtook Maximilian Günther (Prema Powerteam) for second position, before the appearance of the safety car.
A safety car caused by an accident between Günther and Jake Hughes (Hitech GP) when the latter tried to overcome. It is the first abandonment for Günther this season, after seventh place as the worst result this year.
At the end of the safety car period, Norris easily overtook Zhou and build a gap to secure the win.
The next focus of the race was the incredible comeback, again, from Joel Eriksson (Motopark). The BMW junior came out tenth and after a decent start he would find himself in ninth place. Before the safety car period He get rid of the yesterday race 2 winner, Ferdinand Habsburg (Carlin) for the eighth place. After the safety car nobody could stop him, the Swede surpassed without problems: Ralf Aron (Hitech GP), Jehan Daruvala (Carlin), Guanyu Zhou and Callum Ilott.
Battle for third position was between the Prema’s of Zhou and Ilott. The British at half-point of the race was able to pass the Ferrari junior for third, but it was in the last lap that this battle was decided as Zhou overtook Ilott for third at Kemmel Straight.
With the abandonment of Günther, the drivers’ championship is alive than ever. Günther leads with 266 points, only 18 more than Norris. Eriksson escapes this weekend and holds the third place in the championship 26 points down.
The next FIA Formula 3 European race will take place in Zandvoort (Netherlands) within three weeks.
