Roy Nissany was happy how things went with the F1 test as he now looks ahead to a development role with Williams and a return to FIA Formula 2 (F2) Championship in 2020.
The Abu Dhabi Pirelli tyre test saw Williams provide track time to F2 racer Nissany on both the days, where the Israeli drove on Day 1 in the afternoon session while he had the car to him in the morning of Day 2, with George Russell and Nicholas Latifi driving around him.
Nissany last drove a F1 car at Circuit Valencia in 2014 with Sauber, when he was racing in the FIA European F3 Championship. It was a surprise call from Williams as he was quick to adapt to the car, and settled in after just a few laps – something which he takes pride in.
“It took me something like, three, four, to five laps to be confident, to start pushing, to have the right late-braking point, [to do] flat corners, fast corners, at the right speed, and surprisingly, it was quite early,” said Nissany, when asked by FormulaRapida.net.
“I was happy with that, and we are already there. Already in the right speed and at the right pace.” He undertook 78 laps in the FW42 across the two days as he now eyes a role with Williams in 2020 alongside a drive in F2, where he last drove in 2018.
The Israeli took time off from F2 in 2019 due to an injury. He remains hopeful that this test could be his ticket into the world of F1. “The opportunity [to test with Williams] came earlier this year, after an injury that I had during 2019.
“It was the reason I didn’t race F2. And my management could get us the right support and got the connection to Williams allowed me this opportunity, this huge opportunity, and it was a great experience. I hope it will open my door into the F1 world.
“I definitely hope [for a larger 2020 role], that’s the aim, and my management team is working hard on it and now it depends if my, I assume that if my performance, and my performance in the team was good enough and I met the expectations, hopefully, yes.
“The aim is also to race in F2 [in 2020].” Nissany raced with Campos in 2018, where he finished 22nd with just the one point but he did not complete the season. He tested for Trident on all the three days in Abu Dhabi, post his F1 run.
