Josef Newgarden topped the warm-up for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma. Newgarden’s in the Chevrolet-powered No. 21 Ed Carpenter Racing machine set the fastest lap at one minute, 17.6431 seconds, still over a second from the times seen on Saturday. Scott Dixon in the No. 9 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevy was in second place, 0.0169 seconds behind Carpenter.
The top Honda driver was Takuma Sato in the No. 14 A.J. Foyt Enterprises machine in third place, 0.5372 seconds from lead. Charlie Kimball was in fourth place in the No. 83 Ganassi Chevy, 0.5490 seconds from lead.
Team Penske qualified in the first two rows for the race, however the team’s quartet didn’t show their pace in the warm-up. Hélio Castroneves was ninth, Juan Pablo Montoya 15th, the championship leader Simon Pagenaud 18th, and Pagenaud’s only title rival Will Power second to last in 21st place.
Even though the qualifying was a disappointment for Andretti Autosport, the team had showed good pace in the practice sessions on Friday and Saturday. In Sunday’s warm-up, Alexander Rossi was fifth, Ryan Hunter-Reay 10th, Carlos Muñoz 11th, and Marco Andretti 13th.
