Netflix signs Gabriel Leone to play Senna in miniseries on F1 driver

Netflix has signed Brazilian actor Gabriel Leone to play Aryton Senna in a miniseries that they are making on the life of the F1 driver.

On his 63rd birthday, Netflix has announced the signing of Brazilian actor Leone to play as Senna for the six-episode miniseries that they are making on the life of the three-time F1 world champion, who sadly lost his life during a grand prix in 1994 in Imola.

The Senna miniseries is not to showcase his career but also his personality and personal relationships especially the disagreements and the obstacles he faced to get into F1 and make a career out of it by winning world championships.

“It is an honor to be able to play one of the greatest national idols, not only in sport, but an icon that inspired our people and speed lovers around the world,” said Leone. “Telling this story to millions of people from various countries with Netflix is a great responsibility and will undoubtedly be one of the biggest challenges of my career so far.”

Interestingly, this is not the only ‘racing’ related project he is involved in. Leone has also been cast as Alfonso de Portago in the movie Ferrari. The Spaniard drove for the Italian manufacturer in 1956 and 1957, but died in the Mille Miglia race in a crash in 1957.

Vicente Amorim is the director of Senna, while Fabiano Gullane is the producer behind the series. “We were thrilled with his audition, with how he brought Ayrton to life,” he said. “He is a Brazilian actor who is emerging as an international star.”

Senna’s sister – Viviane – who is also involved in the project is happy with Leone’s signing. “He has a lot of potential to faithfully transmit Ayrton’s unique personality, especially the one that we as a family knew, off the tracks,” she said.
