Josef Newgarden, a driver from Nashville, could not repeat his victory as a local at the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix, finishing second behind the defending champion and four-time IndyCar winner, Alex Palou.
With a remarkable race start, Newgarden began from the front row but failed to lead any laps of the 225-lap race. Throughout the competition, he fought to stay close to Palou, crossing the finish line 0.8731 seconds behind the winner.
The Team Penske driver experienced difficulties with track position, as his driving style preferred fewer interruptions, but he had to contend with several yellow flags that hindered his progress.
“We weren’t able to make many turns of over 40 laps,” Newgarden pointed out. “Once established, it was a race of positions. You couldn’t lose position on yellow flags, and fewer yellows would have been ideal.”
The team’s decision to switch to ‘red’ alternate tires for the last 32-lap period did not yield the expected results, especially with the clean air advantage Palou enjoyed. Traffic and difficulties during the race also affected his initial progress.
“I got blocked several times, and we lost positions,” he commented. “This is racing; sometimes it goes like that.”
The weather conditions were tough, leaving the drivers exhausted. Newgarden appeared visibly tired after the race, alongside his teammate, David Malukas. Humorously, he commented on how Palou seemed less affected by the humidity: “I think he’s Spanish; he probably doesn’t sweat as much.”
Despite his disappointment in not achieving victory, Newgarden maintained an optimistic outlook, commenting that the day had been acceptable and that they had a competitive car. “It was an acceptable day. We had a good car, and the Chevrolet team did a great job. We’ll accept second place and move on.”
