The competition of the NASCAR Cup at Phoenix Raceway has presented interesting new features, with the practice and qualifying sessions ahead of the race hinting at a great spectacle.
After four months since the last competition, the drivers of the NASCAR Cup Series have experienced a notable change in track conditions. Joey Logano, driver for Team Penske, achieved the best time in qualifying, while the practice sessions were marked by incidents such as tire failures and unexpected spins.
The teams have adjusted their strategies to take advantage of the power increase, which has gone from 670 to 750 horsepower. This variation has led the teams to explore limits of adhesion, as Logano made clear in his press conference after qualifying. “The power is well perceived, the drop in tire performance is significant, and that promotes better competition on the track,” he stated.
The practice sessions, lasting twenty minutes each, were frenetic. The RFK Racing teammates, Chris Buescher and Brad Keselowski, experienced pressure losses in the right front tire, with Keselowski colliding with the wall and needing a backup car. Additionally, Tyler Reddick had his moment of nerves, spinning out in one of the turns.
The message is clear: the tests have shown that drivers need to prepare for an intensely competitive race. With the new dynamics of power and wear, what was expected to be a routine weekend could become one of the most exciting moments of the season. As Logano said, “this could be one of the best races we’ve experienced so far.”
