Nannini returns to F2 for Baku replacing Petecof at Campos

Matteo Nannini, F2

Matteo Nannini will return to Formula 2 (F2) for the Baku weekend as a replacement of Gianluca Petecof at Campos Racing.

After the Monaco F2 weekend, it was speculated that Petecof may not compete for Campos in Baku, due to budgetary issues. It was confirmed by the Brazilian on Tuesday, with the Spanish outfit announcing Nannini as his replacement on Wednesday.

Nannini pulled out of F2 due to sponsorship issues, focusing more on F3 with HWA Racelab. The German outfit replaced him with Jack Aitken in Monaco, who is also to race in Baku. The Italian now returns to the series, but with Campos, alongside Ralph Boschung.

“I am very happy with the opportunity that Campos Racing have given me,” said Nannini. “I had a special friendship with Adrian Campos. He would have loved me to race with his team and this weekend it will become a reality. He will surely be very happy and will look at us from up there. I will give my best on the track. I thank all the Campos family again.”

At the same time, Adrian Campos-Suner Torres added: “We expect to continue the same positive streak of results already seen in Monaco, where our team performed rather well. Baku is a venue in which our drivers have always achieved strong results.

“We feel sorry for Gianluca (Petecof) and the circumstances that prevented him from coming here but we hope to have him with us again in the future. Furthermore, we are pleased to have Matteo (Nannini) joins us for this appointment, and we are sure he will be competitive due to his huge potential as a racing driver.”

This will be the only change for the Baku F2 weekend, while MP Motorsport will continue to have Richard Verschoor alongside Lirim Zendelli. The Dutchman has so far stuck to a race-by-race plan, rather than announcing himself for a full season run.
