Nico Müller claimed the first pole position of the season on the Hockenheimring for this afternoon’s race. Fellow Audi driver, Edoardo Mortara, joins him on front row while Robert Wickens takes third place for Mercedes.
Just like yesterday, this session has been very tight with no real difference between the fastest and the slowest drivers.
Mike Rockenfeller was the first driver to go out but immediately suffered of traffic problems, mostly caused by rookie Esteban Ocon. Mercedes drivers have been through several problems as Gary Paffet got out of track in the third sector.
The timing screens changed at every lap, even at the top but Robert Wickens was the most consistent on top in the first part of the session, followed by Nico Müller.
Unlike BMW and Mercedes drivers, Audi drivers only went out mid-session to have a clear track, which helped Müller and Mattias Ekström a lot.
With five minutes to go, timing screens started to change again when drivers started getting closer to Wickens’ time. Mortara tipped a 1:34.105, four thousandths faster than the Canadian, but with only five seconds to go, Müller went faster than his teammate to claim pole position.
As such, Nico Müller claims his first DTM pole position after a tough 2015 campaign.
He is followed by Mortara and Wickens. Jamie Green, Mike Rockenfeller, Christian Vietoris, Paul Di Resta, Miguel Molina, Mattias Ekström and Marco Wittmann complete the top 10.
