Dorna Sports has signed a preliminary contract to stage the Hungarian GP from 2022 MotoGP season onward at a brand new circuit.

Following the announcement of the return to Brazil in 2022, Dorna Sports is gearing up for another new MotoGP race in the same year, after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to stage the Hungarian GP at a brand new circuit.

The preliminary contract was signed between Dorna and the Hungarian Government, which is looking to build a new circuit in the east of the country. The initial idea is to have a five-year contract, which will start in 2020 and run until the 2026 season.

It is subjected to the final contract signing, which should be done by February 2020. While MotoGP has never raced in its new name in Hungary, the Hungaroring circuit has hosted two world championship events (500cc, 250cc and 125cc) in 1990 and 1992.

“I am very proud to be able to announce negotiations for another addition to the future MotoGP calendar and continue to see our sport grow and develop across the world,” Dorna Sports CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta.

“A new race – and circuit – in Hungary is an exciting prospect for us all and brings MotoGP back to a country with a great tradition in racing in which we’re excited to see MotoGP play a key role going forward.”

At the same time, Hungarian Minister for Innovation and Technology, Lsszlo Palkovics, added: “I am very happy to announce MotoGP is set to return to Hungary. Soon, a strategy for the development of Hungarian motorsports will be submitted to the government.

“This strategy will include numerous objectives and measures, and – in addition to success in the sport and its impact on tourism – it is also needed because the industry has a dominant impact on the success of the Hungarian economy.

“The key areas of intervention are the development of Hungaroring and the domestic sports infrastructure, in which a new circuit and MotoGP event will play a key role.” Hungary is the fourth new venue to eye a race after Finland, Indonesia and Brazil.
