Toto Wolff defends MotoGP’s decision in Qatar

Toto Wolff, team principal of Mercedes in Formula 1, has come out in defense of MotoGP’s decision to continue with the Qatar Grand Prix, held at the Losail International Circuit, despite the complicated current situation in the region due to the armed conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

This event is becoming increasingly controversial. Several riders have expressed their concerns through letters to the organization, the MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (MGPSEG), and have held meetings to try to avoid traveling to Qatar. Furthermore, riders demand security guarantees in case the situation worsens.

In response to the criticisms, Wolff expressed his understanding for those who choose not to travel to Qatar, but reaffirms that the decision made by MotoGP is based on the security guarantees from local authorities, after executive director Carlos Ezpeleta recently visited the circuit.

Currently, Yamaha and its Pramac team have decided not to participate in the race, refusing to travel to conflict-affected areas, a stance that may affect the championship’s competitiveness.

With MotoGP events in this region suspended until March, Formula 1 still has to face races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi at the end of November and early December. Wolff insisted that, so far, there have been no discussions about canceling these races, despite the concerns.

Finally, Ferrari’s director, Fred Vasseur, agreed with Wolff in stating that authorities must remain vigilant about the situation’s evolution. The Formula 1 championship must remain open to the current scenario, respecting the decision of the drivers regarding their participation.
