MotoGP: Martin beats Quartararo by 0.034s to take Austrian GP pole

MotoGP, Jorge Martin

Pramac’s Jorge Martin beat Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo by 0.034s to take MotoGP pole in Austrian GP, with Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia.

Q1:

The first part in MotoGP Austrian GP qualifying saw Pramac Ducati’s Jorge Martin set the pace from the start to make it into Q2 with a 1m23.197s lap, while KTM’s Miguel Oliveira was second to make it in despite a late improvement from Suzuki’s Alex Rins.

The Spaniard missed on a Q2 run for the second straight grand prix, with LCR Honda’s Alex Marquez in 14th from Avintia Ducati’s Enea Bastianini. Teammate Luca Marini finished 17th behind Tech 3 KTM’s Iker Lecuona, while Petronas SRT’s Valentino Rossi was 18th.

The 20 runners were rounded out by Tech 3 KTM’s Danilo Petrucci and Petronas SRT’s Cal Crutchlow, while no one rode the Yamaha of Maverick Vinales, after he was withdrawn from the race due to irregular operation from his side in Styrian GP.

Q2:

The second part in MotoGP Austrian GP saw multiple riders take their chance at the top but Yamaha’s Fabio Quartaro smashed the lap record to take top spot. Only the Ducati runners had any chance to topple the Frenchman, but they were unable to do.

There was a twist in the end, though, with Pramac’s Martin pulling out an extraordinary lap to topple Quartararo and make it a back-to-back MotoGP pole in Austrian GP. He set a 1m22.643s lap to beat the Yamaha rider by 0.034s lap.

Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia was third with Martin’s teammate Johann Zaeco in fourth to make it a double Top 5 for Pramac. Honda’s Marc Marquez was fifth from Ducati’s Jack Miller, while Suzuki’s Joan Mir only managed seventh in the end.

Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro slotted in eighth ahead of the KTM pair of Oliveira and Brad Binder, while Honda’s Pol Espargaro started in Q2 to be 11th from LCR Honda’s Takaaki Nakagami.
