Marc Marquez passed Alex Marquez to win MotoGP sprint in Aragon GP, as Fermin Aldegeur climbed up to finish third.
It was a solid start from Gresini Ducati’s Alex Marquez to lead the MotoGP sprint in Aragon GP as VR46 Ducati’s Franco Morbidelli was second after Ducati’s Marc Marquez and KTM’s Pedro Acosta had minor contact for the former to drop behind him for a brief moment, before he retook fourth.
Acosta lost to Gresini’s Fermin Aldegeur in the process too but the KTM rider fought back to retake fourth. Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo was sixth from Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia, VR46’s Fabio di Giannantonio and Tech 3 KTM’s Maverick Vinales in the points places.
Honda’s Joan Mir was just outside and hustling to get into it but crashed out after an incident involving Pramac Yamaha pair of Jack Miller and Miguel Oliveira. Subsequently, the stewards handed a Long Gap Penalty to Miller for causing a collision, which dropped him to the back of the field.
M Marquez, meanwhile, got through Morbidelli to second. It left the VR46 rider in the clutches of Acosta. The KTM rider made a move but the VR46 rider retook it immediately. This allowed Aldegeur to get on his tail and pass him for fourth. Di Giannantonio was up to sixth from Vinales.
Bagnaia dropped out of the points after a wide moment at Turn 7, as he ran 12th midway in the sprint race. Quartararo too found himself outside the points after a minor contact with Vinales. He was seventh from Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi, who climbed from 20th to eighth.
KTM’s Brad Binder was ninth in a recovery ride after losing chunks of places on opening lap. At the front, M Marquez caught the back of A Marquez and eventually passed him at Turn 1 to take the MotoGP sprint lead. Aldegeur also caught Morbidelli and made quick work to take third.
The VR46 rider had Acosta, di Giannantonio and Vinales on his tail in the last few laps. But it was no such trouble for M Marquez, who secured a fine MotoGP sprint win in Aragon GP ahead of Gresini pair of A Marquez and Aldegeur, as Morbidelli resisted pressure to end up fourth.
Acosta was fifth from di Giannantonio, Vinales, Bezzecchi and Binder in the Top 9 points places, as Trackhouse Aprilia’s Raul Fernandez missed out in 10th from Quartararo and Bagnaia. Despite the penalty, Miller managed to climb back up to finish 13th.
