Alex Marquez held off Marco Bezzecchi to win the MotoGP sprint race in British GP in dry conditions, with Maverick Vinales in third.
After a wet qualifying, it was dry for the MotoGP sprint in British GP as KTM’s Jack Miller took the lead from pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi in the VR46 Ducati as Gresini Ducati’s Alex Marquez maintained third from fast starter Jorge Martin in the Pramac Ducati.
It wasn’t the start that Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia needed as he dropped outside the Top 10 and out of points. GASGAS Tech3’s Augusto Fernandez was fifth from Aprilia pair of Maverick Vinales and Aleix Espargaro, with VR46’s Luca Marini in eighth.
The final point was with KTM’s Brad Binder in ninth from Pramac’s Johann Zarco. As the laps progressed, Marquez was the rider on charge clearing both Bezzecchi and Miller to take the MotoGP sprint lead, as Bezzecchi cleared Miller for third as well.
Both Vinales and Espargaro started to make inroads to be fourth and fifth which dropped Martin to sixth as Zarco climbed up to seventh from Fernandez with Binder having the last point from Marini in the Top 10, as Bagnaia continued to ride outside it.
Honda’s Marc Marquez and Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo continued to languish at the back of the field with no pace at hand. With Marquez keeping off Bezzecchi, it was Miller losing ground lap after lap as his pace started to lower in dry conditions.
Vinales and Espargaro climbed up to third and fourth, with Zarco in fifth after clearing teammate Martin and also Miller. There was a minor touch between Miller and Zarco which upset the Australian as he ran wide and raised his hand on the move.
He came back on Martin to retake the sixth but not for long with Martin fighting back through. At the front, Marquez held off Bezzecchi to register his first MotoGP sprint win in British GP with Vinales rounding the Top 3 from Zarco.
The Frenchman made a last lap move on Espargaro for fourth with Martin in sixth from Miller, Fernandez and Binder in the Top 9 points places, with Marini missing out in 10th from Bagnaia, whereas Marquez was 18th and Quartararo in 21st.
