Francesco Bagnaia hung on to score first win of 2025 ahead new MotoGP points leader Alex Marquez, with Fabio di Giannantonio in third.
A wet race was declared by officials for MotoGP start in Americas GP at Circuit of the Americas. But there were some on slicks and some on wet on the main grid. As the intro was being played, several riders decided to ditch the bike with the wet tyres and run into the pitlane to switch bikes.
It was led by Ducati’s Marc Marquez who sprinted first into the pitlane. He was followed by the likes of Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia, VR46 Ducati’s Fabio di Giannantonio, Honda’s Joan Mir, among others. Tech 3 KTM’s Maverick Vinales had no bike at his disposal as he ran near the pitlane to get one.
The likes of Honda’s Luca Marini, Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo & Alex Rins, LCR Honda’s Johann Zarco, Trackhouse Aprilia’s Ai Ogura, among others, stood at the grid on the slick tyre. The MotoGP start was eventually delayed, with deliberation on a penalty or not continued within the Race Direction.
Post the delayed start, everyone switched on to the slick tyres to start the formation lap in cloudy conditions. There was slight delay again when Vinales aborted the start due to bike issue. But once it got going, M Marquez stormed into the lead and in some distance, leaving others to fight.
Bagnaia did get ahead of A Marquez a couple of times on Lap 1, but the latter held ground to retake second. Di Giannantonio was a steady fourth from teammate Franco Morbidelli, who had pressure from Pramac Yamaha’s Jack Miller along with KTM’s Pedro Acosta and Quartararo.
KTM’s Brad Binder was ninth from Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer, who were in the big group from seventh until 10th. The Honda brigade of Zarco, Marini and Mir were not far off from it. Both Acosta and Quartararo lost out after Lap 1 allowing Binder to take seventh in the pack.
Quartararo tried to hang on to eighth but Acosta took it from him, which allowed Aldeguer to make a move as well for ninth. Quartararo had further trouble after Zarco passed him for 10th, with Marini and Mir passing the Frenchman to drop him to 13th ahead of Aprilia’s Marco Bezzechi.
At the front, M Marquez had some distance on others, as Bagnaia finally made the move on A Marquez to take second. Miller got through Mrobidelli for fifth but the Italian retook it a lap later. The fight for seventh ended between the two KTM riders when Acosta crashed at Turn 1.
He managed to get going but was at the back of the field. Just when he dropped it, Zarco passed Aldeguer for what became eighth. They all gained places when M Marquez crashed at Turn 3 exit after running over the kerb. He dropped to 18th but with the shoe pedal missing.
It was Bagnaia in MotoGP lead from A Marquez and di Giannantonio in the Top 3 with 12 laps remaining. Morbidelli was fourth from Miller, Binder, Zarco, Aldeguer, Marini and Bezzecchi in the Top 10. The Italian managed to clear Mir. The Honda rider, though, crashed out again.
Tech 3’s Enea Bastianini climbed up to 11th from Ogura, who also cleared Quartararo. Trackhouse’s Raul Fernandez was 14th from Rins in the Top 15. M Marquez eventually pitted to retire after Acosta pulled in as well. There was a problem for Binder which forced him to retire from the grand prix.
He had passed Miller for fifth before the drop. Just behind, Aldeguer had to fend off Zarco as they had multiple back and forth between them. Bezzecchi joined the battle for sixth, as Bastianini chased Marini for ninth. He managed to take it and hop onto the battle ahead.
Bezzecchi hustled Zarco for seventh which got Bastianini interested, who got through the Frenchman for eighth when Zarco went down after losing the place. There was a crash for Aldeguer just few seconds later from fifth. He had passed Miller for fifth a lap before he binned it.
It had the Australian in fifth from Bezzecchi and Bastianini, with Marini up to eighth from Ogura and Quartararo in the Top 10. At the front, Bagnaia had enough in the tank to secure his first MotoGP win of the 2025 season in Americas GP ahead of new riders’ points leader, A Marquez.
Di Giannantonio was third from Morbidelli in a good day for VR46 pair, as Miller was the first non-Ducati rider in fifth from Bezzecchi, Bastianini, Marini, Ogura and Quartararo in the Top 10. Teammate Rins was 11th from R Fernandez and Pramac’s Agusto Fernandez – with all four Yamaha riders scoring.
Vinales was 14th from Aprilia’s Lorenzo Savadori in the points in 15th, as LCR’s Somkiat Chantra missed out in 16th ahead of teammate Zarco, who managed to pick up his bike to see the chequered flag. The Frenchman was the last classified finisher which saw five retirements.
