Francesco Bagnaia beat Maverick Vinales by 0.037s to take MotoGP pole in Austrian GP, with Brad Binder ending up P3.
Q1:
It was dry outing at Red Bull Ring in MotoGP qualifying in Austrian GP where KTM’s Jack Miller set the pace initially with a 1m29.123s lap from GASGAS Tech 3’s Pol Espargaro in the Top 2. VR46 Ducati’s Luca Marini was just outside in third with a chance.
Then came Yamaha’s Franco Morbidelli and Gresini Ducati’s Fabio di Giannantonio after the first run. The second outing saw Marini go quickest with a 1m29.120s but Miller bounced back with a 1m28.831s as both secured a Q2 spot in the Top 12.
Espargaro had to be content with third to be 13th but has a 3-place grid drop for a practice offense. A late lap from Ducati’s Enea Bastianini put him in 14th from Morbidelli as Honda’s Joan Mir was 16th where all three riders will gain a spot due to Espargaro’s penalty.
Mir was ahead of Marc Marquez but a late push from RNF Aprilia’s Raul Fernandez put him in 17th as LCR Honda’s Takaaki Nakagami slotted in 19th from di Giannantonio, LCR’s Iker Lecuona, Tech 3’s Augusto Fernandez and Aprilia’s Lorenzo Savadori.
Q2:
It was close fight in the second part of MotoGP qualifying in Austrian GP. Aprilia’s Maverick Vinales had provisional pole with a 1m28.907s lap from Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia and Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo after their first run which saw some lap cancellations.
KTM’s Brad Binder was fourth from VR46’s Marco Bezzecchi, as Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro had a minor fall but managed to get back his bike into the pits. The second run saw Vinales up his pace with a 1m28.576s but he couldn’t hold it for long.
Bagnaia went quickest with a 1m28.539s lap to beat Vinales by 0.037s to take MotoGP pole in Austrian GP as KTM pair of Binder and Miller ended up third and fourth. The Australian came through Q1 to be a solid fourth from Gresini’s Alex Marquez in the Top 5.
VR46’s Marini was sixth from Q1 ahead of teammate Marco Bezzecchi who had multiple of his laps deleted due to track limits. RNF’s Oliveira was eighth from Quartararo who looked good at one point but faded away a bit by the end of the session.
Pramac Ducati’s Johann Zarco lined up in 10th from Aprilia’s Espargaro on his second bike, with Zarco’s teammate Jorge Martin only 12th after a disastrous outing where a lot of his fast laps were deleted due to track limits.
