Last weekend, during the Austrian Grand Prix, former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya expressed his concern for the future of the Williams team. Montoya points out that the British outfit might be forced to set aside their development for 2027 if they want to address the issues affecting their current car for 2026.
After achieving a fifth position in the 2025 constructors’ championship, Williams has started the 2026 season with many difficulties. Their performance continued to struggle during the race in Austria, where both Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon were eliminated in Q1, starting the race from positions 17 and 18 respectively.
The race ended disappointingly for the team, with a retirement from Sainz due to an electrical problem and a 17th place for Albon. In an appearance on the post-race program F1 TV, Montoya made a direct assessment of the team’s situation: “Unless they start bringing improvements, I don’t see how they can recover,” he said.
Montoya emphasized that, like all other teams, Williams needs to make an extra effort in their development to close the gap to their rivals. “They need to decide if they are going to fully commit to solving these problems, even sacrificing their progress for 2027,” he added.
These comments come at a critical moment for Williams, which currently occupies the eighth position in the constructors’ championship, with only 11 points. They are 10 points behind Haas, which is in seventh place, and 9 points ahead of Audi, which occupies the ninth position.
The next challenge for Williams will be the British Grand Prix, which will be held at Silverstone from July 3 to 5.
