Monaco GP: Sainz fastest in FP1; Williams details on livery contest

Monaco GP, F1

Carlos Sainz was fastest in FP1 of F1 Monaco GP from Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, with Williams revealing a contest.

FP1 –

The F1 Monaco GP FP1 session ended under red flag after a late crash for Williams’ Alexander Albon at Turn 1. Exiting the first corner, he lost the rear and hit the barrier which ended the session, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz on top with a 1m13.372s.

It was the second red flag after Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg’s moment at the chicane exiting the tunnel left debris. The German’s left rear hit the barrier, but the team managed to tape it up and send him out during the dying moments of the FP1 session.

While Sainz led the way in the front, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was second from Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. Both the Spaniard and the Brit ran updates on their car, with the latter finally getting a sidepod after running the ‘zero’ one for more than a year.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was fourth from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who had a scrappy session where he couldn’t set a quick lap due to multiple moments on multiple laps. It was similar for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in seventh with set-up not right for him.

McLaren’s Lando Norris was seventh from Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Williams’ Albon in the Top 10. Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas was just outside in 11th with the Haas of Kevin Magnussen in 12th where he had a Turn 1 moment too.

AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda ended up 13th from Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, with Mercedes’ George Russell only 15th where he struggled a bit with grip. The other AlphaTauri of Nyck de Vries was 16th from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

Williams’ Logan Sargeant is under investigation for unsafe release after he complained of wheel issue when slowing down and pitting, as Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu slotted in 19th from Haas’ Hulkenberg, who set his best time on the hard tyres.
