Monaco GP: Hamilton sets FP1 pace from Piastri, Russell

Monaco GP, Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton ended up fastest in FP1 of F1 Monaco GP in a Mercedes 1-3 with George Russell in third behind Oscar Piastri.

Even though it was overcast, the whole of FP1 in F1 Monaco GP was mostly dry despite the red flag intervention to clear the debris laid out by Stake F1 Team’s Zhou Guanyu, who lost his front win endplate at the exit of Turn 1 when he brushed the barrier.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc ran over it and carried it into the pits. It was Mercedes 1-3 where Lewis Hamilton set the pace to lead FP1 of F1 Monaco GP with a 1m12.169s lap with George Russell slotting in third with a 1m12.295s lap.

He was behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri (1m12.198s), with teammate Lando Norris in fourth in their Ayrton Senna-inspired livery. Leclerc was first driver on the medium tyre in fifth from the Aston Martin pair of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

The Visa Cash App RB pair of Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo were eighth and ninth, with the second Ferrari of Carlos Sainz rounding the Top 10 from the Red Bull pair. He led the second half of drivers where almost everyone set their time on the medium tyre.

The Stake F1 Team pair were the ones on the soft tyre in the second half. Valtteri Bottas was 13th behind Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, where the Finn had a Turn 1 moment much like Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg and Williams’ Alexander Albon.

Perez too had a puncture but did manage to return to the pits. Haas’ Kevin Magnussen was 14th from Albon and Hulkenberg, as Williams’ Logan Sargeant ended up 17th. The first of Alpine was 18th ahead of Guanyu, with the other Alpine of Pierre Gasly in 20th.

There was double power unit issue at Alpine, where the team could fix up Ocon’s PU compliance problem pretty quickly but they took their time with the wastegate on Gasly’s car and did manage to get him out for a couple of laps.

The new PU elements for F1 Monaco GP saw Verstappen take his second ES along with the Haas pair of Magnussen and Hulkenberg, with the Haas pair also taking their second CE.  Here’s PU element list: https://www.fia.com/sites/default/files/decision-document/2024%20Monaco%20Grand%20Prix%20-%20New%20PU%20elements%20for%20this%20Competition.pdf
