The Jaguar TCS Racing driver, Mitch Evans, has expressed his frustration after his performance in the first race of the London E-Prix. Evans finished in eighth position, a result he believes reflects his usual bad luck in key moments of the competition.
Despite starting third on the grid, his race was marked by a poorly timed VSC that directly benefited the championship leader, Pascal Wehrlein, from the Porsche team. Wehrlein took advantage of this situation to secure a commanding victory, increasing the pressure on Evans in the title race.
After the race, Evans, who was just two points behind Jake Dennis in the standings, now faces a 21-point deficit with 28 points available. In the early laps, he lost contact with Wehrlein, who was able to establish a considerable gap thanks to the Porsche team’s tactics.
The mid-race VSC was a decisive moment that allowed rivals to make quick pit stops, leaving Evans with few options to recover positions. Although he managed to pass Nico Muller later on, his score was limited to four points, while other drivers who delayed their stops climbed ahead.
Last year’s race saw Evans suffer a major disappointment when Wehrlein snatched the title from him in a dramatic finish. Reflecting on the current situation, Evans stated: ‘We made no mistakes; we just had bad luck with the VSC. Those are things you cannot control.’
Evans had planned to extend his first stint, but the need to overtake Muller forced an early pit stop strategy. ‘With the VSC, you always try to protect yourself; we wanted to stretch our stop, but it was impossible with Muller’s pressure,’ he added.
The championship situation is complicated for Evans, who acknowledges that his only option is to qualify well and win the next race. ‘I am aware that the situation is not ideal, but in Formula E, unexpected things can happen,’ he concluded.
In response to Porsche’s tactics, Evans commented that they were more extreme than he expected. ‘You know they play to win, but their methods were a bit more drastic than we thought. They have a clear favorite in the team, and we saw that in qualifying,’ he said.
His teammate, Antonio Felix da Costa, agreed with his analysis of Porsche’s strategy, while lamenting that a poor qualifying left Jaguar in a disadvantageous position to counter their rivals.
