Mick Schumacher’s debut on an oval was a rollercoaster of emotions at the IndyCar circuit in Phoenix, where he achieved a strong qualifying but had to face adversity during the race. After a frustrating debut in St. Petersburg, Schumacher showcased his potential by qualifying fourth.

The German driver, son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, captured the attention of those present, including the current IndyCar champion, Josef Newgarden, who described his qualifying performance as “surprisingly good.”

Despite the promising start, Saturday’s race quickly became complicated. Schumacher dropped into the middle of the pack at the start as more aggressive drivers tried to overtake. “It was surprisingly hectic, things were moving very fast,” he commented after the race.

Everything seemed to be on track until the first pit stop, where a problem with the tire-changing tool caused a significant delay. “That basically cost us a lap,” Schumacher explained, as he was forced to compete in the back of the pack without being able to recover the lost time.

Instead of fighting for a top-ten finish, the rest of the race became an intensive test for the 26-year-old driver, who ultimately crossed the finish line in 18th position, one lap behind winner Newgarden.

Despite the disappointment of the result, Schumacher highlighted the positive aspects of the experience. He learned a lot about tire usage in the context of an oval, pointing out that it is important to understand where tire wear occurs and how that affects vehicle performance throughout the race.

The experience in Phoenix showed that, despite having great pace, Schumacher will need to adapt to the aggressive driving style required on oval circuits, as well as a bit of good luck. IndyCar is now heading to an urban circuit with a new race scheduled for March 15 in Arlington, Texas.
