Ex-Formula 1 driver Roberto Merhi will make his FIA Formula 2 Championship return with Campos Racing for the rest of the 2018 season.

The Spaniard started his season with MP Motorsport alongside Ralph Boschung but was replaced by Dorian Boccolacci from Spa-Francorchamps onward. However, he now makes a return to the junior formulae with Campos Racing.

He will compete in this weekend’s round at Sochi and will also do the season finale at Yas Marina Circuit. “Im pleased to make my comeback to the FIA Formula 2 Championship with Campos Vexatec Racing,” said Merhi.

“We know each other perfectly and I think we aspire for big things in the remaining races; Campos has a competitive car and, besides, I have gained valuable experience earlier this season. So I feel more prepared after achieving good results.”

Team boss Adrian Campos added: “We have no doubts Roberto has bold goals ahead. I’m sure he will perform extremely well in the upcoming races. He has already experience in the series and we are expecting great results considering how talented Roberto is.

“Adaption isn’t a problem either as we have already worked together previously. We will make our best to make him feel at home and meet our expectations.” Merhi did well in the eight rounds he competed prior to Belgium.

He scored 41 points which included a podium and he still sits 14th in the drivers’ standings from the 22 entered in 2018. He will replace Israeli Roy Nissany in the team to drive alongside Luca Ghiotto.
