The Mercedes Formula 1 team has decided to withdraw its request for a review regarding the time penalty imposed on George Russell during the Monaco Grand Prix, as announced by the FIA.
Russell received a penalty for speeding in the pit lane, and a recent error was discovered in the timing at the pit entry that was causing errors in the timing signals. As a consequence, the British driver was excluded from the podium when he did not properly serve his penalty, and his teammate, Oscar Piastri, also lost the opportunity to race on the podium. On the other hand, Pierre Gasly of Alpine did not serve his two penalties until after the race, losing the podium position that had been awarded to him.
After Alpine submitted a request for review and the stewards revoked Gasly’s penalties last Friday, he regained his podium place. This situation led Mercedes to file its own request for review last Tuesday to see if they could change Russell’s result.
However, the FIA confirmed Thursday afternoon that Mercedes had decided to withdraw its request, acknowledging that it was unlikely to succeed. “The stewards have been informed that the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team withdraws its request for review concerning the decisions of the stewards of the Monaco Grand Prix 2026, regarding the violation of Article B1.6.3a of the FIA F1 Regulations concerning Car 63,” wrote the FIA stewards.
Additionally, Red Bull and McLaren have filed an appeal against Gasly’s reinstatement, considering it unfair that the Frenchman was rewarded for not serving his penalties while other unjust penalties could not be annulled. This procedure will be examined by the FIA International Appeal Court.
