George Russell accepts that Mercedes’ team orders at the Dutch GP were ‘the right decision’

The Mercedes driver, George Russell, has acknowledged that his team made the right decision in swapping positions with his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, at the end of the Dutch GP. This happened while they were battling to secure second place behind the current winner, Lando Norris.

Russell and Antonelli were in second and fourth place, respectively, when a virtual safety car due to a failure of Esteban Ocon changed the race strategy. At that moment, Lewis Hamilton from Ferrari positioned himself between them, which forced Mercedes to react.

Hamilton made a pit stop during the safety car to optimize his tires, which led Mercedes to bring Antonelli in to defend against his strategy. Russell, who stayed on track, initially found himself in the position of having second place on the road, until the team management requested that he let Antonelli pass to maximize the team’s chances.

Thus, Russell ceded the position, despite being concerned about the change, as he wanted to secure his place on the podium. However, luck smiled on him with a new virtual safety car that allowed him to defend his third position against Hamilton, ensuring a double podium for Mercedes.

Reflecting on the situation, Russell admitted that the swap was the right decision, as Antonelli was on a better pace with faster tires. ‘Kimi deserved to finish ahead of me,’ he commented. Although it was an intense battle, Russell appreciated being able to be on the podium again after a period without being able to do so.

Antonelli, for his part, thanked Russell for his teammate attitude and expressed concern about the return of McLaren, which has shown a significant return of speed in the last races, indicating that they will have to work to close the gap.
