Mercedes, Red Bull differ on Abu Dhabi GP tyre strategy from Ferrari

The final tyre choices has been revealed by Pirelli for the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi GP as Mercedes, Red Bull Racing differ from Ferrari.

The hypersoft compound sets are same for Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari, Haas and Sauber at eight, but the other two compounds differ for all the teams for the Abu Dhabi GP at Yas Marina Circuit during November 23-25 weekend.

While the Mercedes and Red Bull drivers have gone for three sets of ultrasoft and two of supersoft, the two Ferrari drivers have opted for the opposite with three sets of supersoft and two of the ultrasoft.

On the other hand, Romain Grosjean and Charles Leclerc has the same choice as the Mercedes and Red Bull drivers, but Kevin Magnussen and Marcus Ericsson have gone for four sets of ultrasoft and only the one of supersoft.

The Racing Point Force India and McLaren drivers have gone for nine sets of hypersoft compound along with two sets each of the ultrasoft and supersoft tyres – with all the four drivers opting for the same strategy.

With 10 sets of the hypersoft compound will be the drivers from Williams and Toro Rosso with Lance Stroll and Pierre Gasly going for two sets of the ultrasoft tyre and one of the supersoft, while Sergey Sirotkin and Brendon Hartley going for the opposite.

Renault will be the sole team with just the seven sets of hypersoft compound with Nico Hulkenberg going for five sets of ultrasoft and one of supersoft to Carlos Sainz’s four sets of ultrasoft and two of supersoft compound.

The teams get 13 set of tyres for the weekend, with one set of the softest compound to be kept for use in Q3. After the completion of qualifying, the Top 10 drivers will have to return that set, while the other drivers can keep it for the race.

For the races, each driver has to keep one set each of the two harder compounds available for the weekend, while the rest 10 sets they are free to choose from the three available compounds for the particular drive.
