Mercedes, Ferrari has opposite tyre strategy for Singapore GP

Pirelli has revealed the tyre choices for the Singapore GP as Mercedes and Ferrari drivers go for an opposite strategy for the street race at Marina Bay circuit.

The Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen are aggressive with nine sets of hypersoft compound for the Singapore GP – the maximum chosen along with the Racing Point Force India and Haas F1 Team’s drivers.

Both Vettel and Raikkonen along with Kevin Magnussen have gone for three sets of ultrasoft and just one of soft in their other two choices while Sergio Perez, Esteban Ocon and Romain Grosjean will have two each of ultrasoft and soft compound.

On the other hand, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will only of six sets of hypersoft tyres which is the lowest among all the teams. They will have four sets of ultrasoft and three of soft respectively.

Renault, Toro Rosso and McLaren have gone for eight sets of hypersoft tyres with Nico Hulkenberg, Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne opting for three sets of soft and two ultrasoft each as their other compounds.

At the same time, Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley will have four sets of ultrasoft tyres and two of soft. Red Bull Racing and Williams have gone for seven sets of hypersoft compound each for their drivers.

While Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen will have three sets of ultrasoft and two soft compound, Sergey Sirotkin has gone for five sets of ultrasoft and one soft with Lance Stroll having four sets of ultrasoft and two soft compound.

The teams get 13 set of tyres for the weekend, with one set of the softest compound to be kept for use in Q3. After the completion of qualifying, the Top 10 drivers will have to return that set, while the other drivers can keep it for the race.

For the races, each driver has to keep one set each of the two harder compounds available for the weekend, while the rest 10 sets they are free to choose from the three available compounds for the particular drive.
