Mercedes is limited by its budget capacity in the development of F1

The director of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, Toto Wolff, has stated that the team does not have the necessary resources to develop the 2026 car in the same way that its competitors, McLaren and Ferrari, are doing. This situation has been reflected in Mercedes’ inability to make significant updates throughout the season.

With notable changes in the performance of McLaren and Ferrari vehicles, which are now winning several races, Mercedes has found difficulties in maintaining its initial competitiveness. Wolff commented that the team has kept a more conservative development plan, with little progress since the Canadian Grand Prix in May.

After the consecutive victory of world champion Lando Norris in Zandvoort, Wolff admitted that Mercedes cannot match the efforts of its rivals in the current development race. He indicated that the team must push updates with careful planning within the assigned cost cap of $215 million.

Wolff highlighted that the team has left between 50 and 100 points on the table due to reliability issues with its power unit, which has affected George Russell and Kimi Antonelli and could lead to grid penalties in future races. Furthermore, he noted that he does not think too much has been spent in the early months of the season.

With hopes of implementing significant updates to the W17 car starting with the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia in early October, Wolff acknowledged that budget constraints are a challenge for Mercedes in its fight to regain its dominant position.
