The driver and Sky Sports commentator, Naomi Schiff, has expressed her concern about the reliability issues of the Mercedes engine, which could affect the victory chances of the championship leader, Kimi Antonelli.
Antonelli currently leads the drivers’ standings with 320 points, while his teammate, George Russell, is in second place with 236 points.
During the Sky Sports F1 Show, Schiff discussed Russell’s unfortunate outcome in the Malaysian Grand Prix, where he suffered an engine failure in the final laps, widening the gap to 84 points between him and Antonelli.
“It’s not good that this is happening. It has happened several times, not only with George’s car; Kimi has also had problems,” Schiff commented. “There is a broader issue that concerns Toto Wolff, who has expressed his frustration about this situation”.
Schiff pointed out that these failures could cost Antonelli victories in his pursuit of his first championship title. “You have to wonder why they are having so many reliability problems in general,” she added.
“This could mean a significant loss of points not only for Kimi, but also for the team in the fight for the constructors’ championship. Other teams, like Red Bull, are also fighting for points, and every Mercedes failure is an opportunity for them”.
The vulnerability of Mercedes engines is becoming a source of concern as the season nears its end, and fans are eager to see how the team manages these challenges.
