After an intense sprint qualifying at the Marina Bay Circuit, the 2026 Formula 1 championship is shaping up to be tighter than ever. Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen claimed pole position, closely followed by Mercedes driver George Russell, Ferrari racer Charles Leclerc, and McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, who secured a commendable fourth place.
Andrea Stella, the team principal of McLaren, expressed his relief at this surprising starting order. The qualifying session highlighted a diversity in the teams occupying the top positions, indicating a better performance for McLaren.
Return to form
After struggling severely with vehicle dynamics in recent rounds in Azerbaijan and Malaysia, the team has once again shown competitive performance. “The qualifying session was very interesting and full of drama, which confirms that the frontrunners are very closely matched,” Stella told the press.
Piastri, who finished in the second row, was joined by his teammate Lando Norris, who ended qualifying in fifth position, just 0.055 seconds behind Leclerc. Stella is optimistic about McLaren’s race potential at this circuit.
“We are reasonably satisfied with the results and the level of performance shown. This indicates that, at least at this circuit, we have returned to a situation similar to before Baku,” he stated. “All things considered, it is a good starting point for the rest of the weekend, and we hope to compete for a podium finish.”
Risky strategy in SQ3
Navigating the sprint qualifying format can be challenging, especially with the track evolution that occurs under the lights of Singapore. After a complicated initial session, McLaren opted for an unconventional strategy during the final round of SQ3.
Instead of making a single attempt with soft tires, the team decided to send both cars out on track for multiple attempts. “In SQ3, we decided to make two quick laps to make the most of the switch from medium to soft tires,” Stella explained. “This year’s soft tires do not show significant degradation.”
With eyes on tomorrow’s sprint race, McLaren hopes to continue refining its mechanical setups without the pressure of a full race.
