McLaren has announced the retention of Jake Hughes for the upcoming 2023/24 Formula E season after an impressive first year.

The NEOM McLaren Formula E Team today announces that Jake Hughes will remain with the team for the 2023/24 season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Jake has had an impressive first season in Formula E. In his first race in Formula E, the 2023 Mexico City E-Prix, Jake qualified P3, finishing the race in P5. He then secured the team’s first pole position at only his third race in Diriyah, before clinching a second pole position at the 2023 Monaco E-Prix. He finished the 2022/23 season in P12.

Jake previously held the role of reserve and development driver during Season 7 and Season 8 with the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team, being instrumental to the team’s successes during those seasons. For the 2022/23 season, he competed in Formula E on a full-time basis with the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team.

The team announced earlier this week that René Rast has left the team after one season together. Announcements about who will be partnering with Jake Hughes next season will be made in due course. The NEOM McLaren Formula E Team will be in action later this year when official testing begins (23 – 27 October 2023, in Valencia, Spain) ahead of the first round of Season 10 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the Mexico City E-Prix, on 13 January 2024.

Jake Hughes said: “I’m really happy to be remaining with the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team for Season 10. The team has been my home for a number of years, and I have loved every minute of it. We had a bit of a mixed season, but I had a lot of personal highlights which I’m hoping to build upon next year with the team and fight for wins and podiums, which I have no doubt we’ll be able to achieve together. I can’t wait for Season 10.”

Ian James, Managing Director, NEOM McLaren Electric Racing and Team Principal, NEOM McLaren Formula E Team, said: “I am excited to be able to share that we will be continuing our relationship with Jake. Even though we never had any doubts about his performance, he impressed the team and the wider paddock with a great rookie season. Jake’s commitment to the team and to Formula E is outstanding. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Jake and the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team.”

Zak Brown, CEO, McLaren Racing, said: “I am delighted that Jake will remain with the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team for Season 10. As we expected, Jake has proven himself to be an exceptional talent, delivering some strong results for the team in 2023, including two pole positions. As we look forward to Season 10, I’m excited to see what Jake and the team can achieve.”
