McLaren will experiment with an inverted wing at the Austrian GP of F1

The Formula 1 driver McLaren will test a new inverted wing design concept during this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix. This innovation adds to the initiatives of teams like Ferrari and Red Bull, which have also explored similar designs recently.

Last season, Ferrari surprised the F1 world during winter testing with a wing that rotated 180 degrees when using straight mode. This design caught the attention of rivals, who are now looking to develop their own versions.

Red Bull, for its part, unveiled an inverted wing during the Miami Grand Prix, although its operation was different. Now, McLaren joins the trend with what they have described as an “experimental wing” that will debut during Friday’s practice sessions in Austria.

According to the team, they have planned small refinements to the rear curves of the MCL40 model, as well as the introduction of the experimental wing. “We are focused on making adjustments that bring performance and reduce lap time for the vehicle,” stated McLaren’s technical director, Neil Houldey.

Although this new wing is a test element and will not be used beyond Friday’s practice, it could be an opportunity for future developments. After analysis at the factory, this design could reappear later as a performance upgrade.

McLaren has made recent updates focused on significant improvements and is closing in on Mercedes, the championship leader. However, Ferrari’s own improvements have also solidified it as a key competitor, with McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, and world champion, Lando Norris, acknowledging that the SF-26 is one of the best chassis on the current grid.
