McLaren revisits the discarded front wing at the Monaco GP

After the last Canadian Grand Prix, McLaren has decided to reevaluate its new front wing during the upcoming competition in Monaco. Although drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri opted for an earlier solution, the team believes this innovation should not be definitively discarded.

The Canadian GP was a challenge for the team, as the debut of new features, including a front wing, took place during a sprint weekend limited to a single practice session. With only one hour available, the drivers faced difficulties adapting to the new components. Norris ended up using the previous wing, while Piastri utilized the new wing for part of the session.

After the race, Norris pointed out that the lack of confidence with the new wing could be one of the key factors in his decision. “We need to make sure it works correctly next time,” he said.

Despite the initial impressions, the team has decided to reevaluate the wing in Monaco, where conditions may provide a better understanding of its performance. Additionally, the new wing might fit better within the context of the mountainous circuit.

The team director, Andrea Stella, stated that they want to repeat the tests to gain more insight into the impact this part has on the overall aerodynamics of the car. “We know there are elements of aerodynamic deviation, and we need to understand why the simulations did not match the results obtained on track,” he commented.

By reiterating tests, McLaren hopes to seize the opportunity to adjust its designs and gain advantages in upcoming competitions.
