The MotoGP rider Marc Márquez expressed his confusion regarding the significant loss of performance of his tires during the sprint of the GP of Great Britain. At Silverstone, Márquez, who was competing with the Ducati team, finished the race in ninth position after a complicated day.
The race started on a positive note for Márquez, who passed Marco Bezzecchi and was fourth by the end of the first lap. However, his performance was affected starting from the fifth lap, when Bezzecchi passed him again in the challenging Maggots and Becketts corners.
While the front riders maintained a pace around 1:58, Márquez struggled with tires that provided a twenty-second lap time. This situation caused him to fall further in the ranking, allowing riders like Alex Márquez, Pedro Acosta, and Franco Morbidelli to overtake him.
Ultimately, Márquez managed to keep ahead of Diogo Moreira and scored a point, despite the intense competition where Aprilia dominated the podium with three riders at the front. At the end of the race, the reigning champion could not hide his disappointment over the premature degradation of his tires.
The Spanish rider highlighted that, although he expected some tire wear, he did not imagine it would affect his performance so much. ‘I had a new feeling during the sprint race. We did not experience this drop during practice,’ he commented.
According to Márquez, the issue was more about the tire wearing than normal degradation. He explained that the phenomenon is known as graining, where the rubber breaks but then re-bonds, creating an uneven surface.
The tires that Michelin brought, the soft and medium, were the correct ones for the conditions, but their setup with the pavement did not seem ideal for the rider. Currently, Márquez has dropped to fourth place in the overall standings, with a distance of 29 points from the leader, Jorge Martín.
