The former F1 driver spoke about his good friend Fernando Alonso, with whom they have always shown a great relationship.
Mark Webber analyzed the new competitive life of Fernando Alonso. The Australian wanted to comment on the double life that the Spanish will take this 2018. The Spaniard, who will run the 21 races of the F1 World Championship, in addition to participating in the WEC races, including the 24 hours of Le Mans, raises disparity of opinions on his decision.
Webber is one of those who is happy that the drivers can combine two different competitions at the same time, although he thinks that if Fernando had a competitive car he would not: “Now he can do it because there is less F1 test and it has not been, clearly, competitive. But if he was fighting for the world championship, He would never do anything of all that”, Webber said.
Despite this, the Australian praises his friend Alonso, whom he “admires“: “He is definitely a driver, and we admire that of him. He wants to run, he wants to compete in every possible opportunity. Something that was not done three or four years ago, simply because it was not the right thing to do. He does not spent much time in the simulator of McLaren, if any. He’s an old school driver, and that’s what we all admire about him”, said the former Red Bull driver.
Mark points to a possible discontent of Mclaren in this situation: “For him Le Mans is fantastic, he really will enjoy it. He will enjoy everything, but I am not sure that everyone enjoys it, but I’m not sure how stoked McLaren are with the whole thing“, Webber said, adding: “I thought the idea of Indy was incredible. Obviously, McLaren had an awkward season last year. But hopefully this year they will be more competitive”.
Webber wanted to send a message to Alonso: “I just hope the distractions of trying to bounce around from all the categories, when there’s a really good result in F1 on the table, that he doesn’t miss it through burning too many candles”, concluded the Australian.
