The BMW driver, Marco Wittmann, has experienced one of the most complicated weekends of his career in the DTM competition in Oschersleben. Despite being affected by gastroenteritis that caused him to lose five kilograms in just four days, he managed to finish the race just outside the podium, in fourth place.
The week prior to the race, Wittmann felt unwell, suffering symptoms that started at eight in the evening, after a holiday with his family in South Tyrol. ‘I had never experienced such rapid weight loss,’ he commented, pointing out that he couldn’t keep anything in his stomach for several days.
Dietary strategy during the competition
Although his health stabilized before the races, Wittmann had to limit himself to a diet of easily digestible pasta and vegetables to regain strength. The support from his team, as well as from medical professionals, was essential throughout the weekend, including receiving intravenous infusions.
Challenge on the track
Despite the difficulties, Wittmann showed great competitiveness, achieving a fast time in the qualifying sessions and choosing a good starting position. In the race, he fought fiercely against Manthey Racing driver Thomas Preining, nearly reaching third place before finishing fourth. ‘Concentration was a bigger challenge than usual, but adrenaline pushed me to keep going,’ he explained.
Looking to the future
Despite the adversities, Wittmann has confirmed that he is determined to participate in the upcoming race at the Road America circuit in the IMSA, where he will share his vehicle with Philipp Eng. His experience has once again demonstrated his fighting spirit and ability to overcome extreme situations, showcasing the true essence of motorsport drivers.
