Marc Márquez has responded to the criticism regarding his pit entry during the sprint race of the Spanish GP, where he achieved his second victory of the 2026 MotoGP season at the Jerez circuit.
With five laps remaining, Márquez, who was competing in second place, decided to make a bike change after an accident in the last corner made him rethink his strategy. Although he assured that he let all the other riders pass before rejoining the track, his pit entry via the grass has sparked debates about its legality.
Despite the critical voices, including that of Johann Zarco from LCR, who suggested Márquez’s actions deserved a penalty, the race did not initiate investigations into the incident.
Responding to questions about the controversy, Márquez said: “I don’t know, read the rules! If you don’t gain time and don’t create a dangerous situation, you are within the rules.” He clarified that his priority was to avoid any danger when rejoining the race.
The MotoGP rules specified that riders should only use the circuit and the pit lane, but there was no explicit mention of the outer line at the pit entry that Márquez crossed.
Moreover, the Spaniard admitted that his victory depended more on circumstances than on his absolute speed, acknowledging that his brother, Àlex Márquez, was a faster rider during the competition.
“I should say I was lucky. It was a smart decision to stop in the safety area, but I just crossed paths with the race factors,” Márquez concluded.
