Kevin Magnussen left frustrated and confused by penalty in F1 Italian GP, as the FIA confirms a race ban for Azerbaijan GP.

It was a hectic race for both the Haas cars in F1 Italian GP at Monza. It started with Nico Hulkenberg having an off after being squeezed out by Daniel Ricciardo on Lap 1. The Australian was handed 5s time penalty, as Magnussen made up places then after.

Hulkenberg made further contact with Yuki Tsunoda, while Magnussen himself had run-ins with Ricciardo, Alexander Albon and Pierre Gasly. For the move against the Frenchman, the Dane was handed a 10s time penalty after he was wholly blamed for it.

The FIA reckoned the overtake move by Magnussen on Gasly at Turn 4 was not done in ‘safe and controlled manner’, which is why the the Dane was penalised. Upon the two points added to his superlicense, his tally went up from 10 to 12.

That was enough to warrant a race ban and he will miss the F1 Azerbaijan GP as a result. He was on 10 points since the Chinese GP. Despite the heavy shunt in Monaco, he raced trouble-free but a ban was always to happen at certain point of 2024 season.

Magnussen knew it as well, but was still frustrated and confused by the 10s time penalty, which dropped him from ninth to 10th – although still in points after a hard race. “Yeah, I am frustrated about the penalty, I don’t understand it,” he said.

“Flat out, I am just completely confused. Me and Gasly raced hard at Turn 4, made slight contact and we both missed the corner, came back on track again with no damage to the car, no consequence of the race for either of us and I get a 10s penalty.

“On Lap 1, Ricciardo and Nico, he put Nico on the grass at 300 km/hr, completely destroys Nico’s race, maximum consequence and damage to Nico’s car and he gets a 5s penalty. Where’s the logic? I just don’t get.

“[Now I] turn up in Singapore. I didn’t even know I have two points, I have heard it from you, not officially. I said all the time, I am not going to hold back, it doesn’t make sense and I scored a point in the race,” summed up Magnussen, whose replacement will be confirmed by Haas in due course but Oliver Bearman is most likely to take it.
