James Vowles, team principal of Williams, has expressed his support for Madrid as a key event for Formula 1, despite its first edition facing some challenges.
The recent Spanish Grand Prix, held at the new Madring circuit, was marked by the typical experience of new circuits that often face logistical issues. Vowles praised the organizers for their efforts in the first edition of the race.
“First of all, I want to congratulate the organizers,” Vowles said in a recent episode of his show. “It is the inaugural year of the grand prix, and usually this means the event can be a bit chaotic, but in Madrid it wasn’t like that. It may be one of the races to follow in the future.”
Vowles highlighted the location of the circuit, just half an hour from the center of the Spanish capital, pointing out the large space available for attendees. However, he warned that such a large area also comes with the disadvantage of long distances between zones.
Despite the positive aspects, the circuit has received criticism for the lack of overtaking opportunities. Vowles acknowledged that the complexity of the layout turned into an interesting challenge for the drivers, but the race suffered in terms of competition. “The circuit is technical, and the drivers commented that it was a challenge, but the race suffered in terms of competitiveness. However, he noted that the tires provided by Pirelli performed well during the race and that the state of the track was adequate. Vowles concluded with a wish to improve the racing experience, stating that it is crucial to increase overtaking opportunities in future events.
