Red Bull Racing has announced that it intends to reintroduce the rotating rear wing on its RB22 car during the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix. This innovative solution, which improves straight-line performance, was widely discussed after being used for the first time in the Miami race.
Despite its initial acceptance, the wing was withdrawn after driver Max Verstappen suffered two accidents during recent races, one during qualifying at the Red Bull Ring and the other at Silverstone. Consequently, the team decided to compete in Belgium with a conventional wing to ensure the driver’s safety.
Red Bull’s technical director, Pierre Wache, has stated that the ‘Macarena’ wing, which Verstappen considered ‘very dangerous’, is being reviewed with the aim of addressing the mechanical issues identified after the accident at the Silverstone Grand Prix. Wache noted that the necessary changes are being made under the supervision of the FIA.
In the two free practice sessions held at Spa-Francorchamps, Verstappen led the first session and achieved the third best time in the second, behind Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris. Wache emphasized that while the car’s balance could improve, they have achieved a good starting point to tackle the Hungarian Grand Prix.
