Christian Lundgaard, driver for Arrow McLaren, will be forced to overcome a significant challenge from the back of the grid in the upcoming Grand Prix of Portland, after serious electrical issues compromised his qualifying.
With two victories in his season and sitting in fourth place in the championship, Lundgaard arrived in Portland with high hopes. However, his #7 Chevrolet vehicle suffered a failure that left him powerless on the challenging 1.964-mile track with 12 turns.
The troubles began midway through the first qualifying round (Q1), when, after entering the pits for new tires, the car’s electronic system failed. ‘I’m quite disappointed with how our day has ended, as it seemed like we had improved our speed,’ Lundgaard commented. ‘My dashboard stopped working while we were changing tires, and when the car restarted, my hybrid system wasn’t working.’
Without the additional power provided by the hybrid system, the Danish driver was unable to set a competitive time, leaving him stuck at the bottom of the speed charts. This comes at a delicate moment for the team, which had experienced promising setup changes the previous night.
The race in Portland presents a significant challenge, as the track offers fewer opportunities to overtake compared to the wide layouts of Road America, where Lundgaard made an impressive comeback from last to first place at the end of June. ‘I’ll do what I can with the car for the rest of the session, even if it’s not much without the operational hybrid system. We’ll be starting from the back tomorrow, which will be tough on this layout, but we are ready to accept the challenge,’ Lundgaard added, strong and determined to fight for a good position in the race.
