Christian Lundgaard faces a challenge from the back of the grid in Portland

Christian Lundgaard will need to mount an impressive comeback from the back of the grid after suffering serious electrical problems during qualifying for the Grand Prix of Portland.

The Arrow McLaren driver arrived at this race weekend sitting fourth in the championship standings, buoyed by two victories this season, including a spectacular recovery from last to first place at Road America last June. However, the 25-year-old Dane needs to achieve a similar performance on the Portland International Raceway, a 1.964-mile natural circuit with 12 corners, after a series of electrical issues left his car, the number 7 Chevrolet, well below its normal power.

The problems began midway through the first round of qualifying (Q1), when Lundgaard entered the pits to change tires, and the electronic difficulties quickly escalated. “I’m quite disappointed with how our day ended, as it seemed we had made progress overnight with our pace,” Lundgaard commented. “My dashboard froze when we entered to change tires, and when we turned it back on, my hybrid system wasn’t working after that.”

Without the support of the hybrid system, Lundgaard could not generate the necessary speed to set a competitive time, getting stuck at the bottom of the speed charts for the rest of the session. This mechanical failure comes at a delicate time for Arrow McLaren, as configuration changes made the night before had shown promising results for qualifying.

Navigating through traffic at the Portland circuit is considerably more difficult than at Road America, where Lundgaard made his most memorable comeback. “I’ve had to do what I could with the car during the rest of the session, which, obviously, hasn’t been much without the hybrid system working,” he added. “We’ll start from the back tomorrow, which can be challenging at this track, but we’re up for the challenge.”
