In Q1, only Red Bull and Mercedes have dared to use the medium compound in order to pass to Q2, and have succeeded without difficulty, but it has become clear that they need the soft compound in order to enter to the Q3. Sergio Perez saved himself in the last moment of being eliminated, leaving out of the Q2 the two Williams, adding this, Gutierrez has surpassed Bottas by just 12 thousandths. As usual, Charles Pic has surpassed his teammate Giedo van der Garde, and Jules Bianchi has done the same with Max Chilton, despite his illness. On top, the fastest Felipe Massa was ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso.
In Q2 we had the big surprise at Mercedes: the team has been relaxed and left Nico in the pits with a time that was at the end not enough to get into Q3 (simply repeating the time done in the free practice he would have passed into the Q3). The other drivers left out of the Q3 were: Paul di Resta, Sergio Perez, Esteban Gutierrez, Adrian Sutil and Jean Eric Vergne. Both the latter and Sergio Perez have been clearly defeated by their teammates, who have entered into Q3. Felipe Massa was again the fastest in this session.
In Q3, in Ferrari did not relied on the positions seen in Q1 and Q2 and have decided that they preferred to go further back in the grid but with medium tyres. Finally Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso were 7th and 8th respectively, thanks to Jenson Button and Nico Hulkenberg who have not made any time. The pole was taken at the last moment by Lewis Hamilton, beating Sebastian Vettel, who has not managed to win at home yet. Mark Webber has done a poor third sector that has prevented him to fight for the pole but he finally achieved the third place, ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean, Daniel Ricciardo, and the drivers that we discussed earlier.
