Moto2 rider Iker Lecuona has got an early MotoGP debut in place of an injured Miguel Oliveira at Valencia for Tech 3 KTM.
Lecuona, who was scheduled to make his MotoGP debut in 2020 alongside Oliveira for Tech 3 KTM, will get an early debut at Valencia this year after the Portuguese rider’s surgery on his right shoulder. Oliveira is ruled out of action until February.
This helps Lecuona to get an early MotoGP chance after his Moto2 team American Racing agreed to release him from his contract, as the outfit has announced Sean Dylan Kelly as his replacement. Lecuona will also take part in the post-season Valencia test.
“To have this opportunity in my home Grand Prix is a proud moment for me,” said Lecuona, upon the announcement. “We must enjoy this beautiful experience, but above all learn as much as possible for the future.
“All this would not have been possible without the help and encouragement of Herve Poncharal, as well as Eitan Butbul and the American Racing Team amazing crew, they helped me to grow as a rider and as a person.
“I also want to wish the best possible recovery to Oliveira, who will be my teammate next season. I will give my best in Valencia as I always do.” The Spaniard to end his Moto2 season in 11th – unless it changes after Valencia – with a podium and 90 points.
Leucona will join Hafizh Syahrin in the final round at Valencia, who will be competing in his last MotoGP event as the Malaysian returns to Moto2 in 2020 with Angel Nieto.
