Leclerc defends Ferrari’s strategic decision at the Dutch GP

The Dutch Grand Prix has been marked by a risky decision from Ferrari that has raised diverse opinions. Charles Leclerc, who finished second in the Zandvoort sprint race, opted to start on soft tires, a decision that has generated unease among his rivals and within the team itself.

Leclerc managed to overtake Lando Norris during the race, a maneuver that stands out in a relatively quiet race. This action, while notable, was possible thanks to variations in power distribution and, essentially, tire selection. The Monegasque driver pointed out that it was a big gamble considering he was only one of two drivers choosing soft tires for the start of the shortest race of the weekend.

Despite his initial concerns upon seeing all the other drivers lined up on medium tires, Leclerc stated that, in the end, his decision stood as a good strategy. ‘When you’re the only one doing something, it’s either very good or very bad,’ he quipped. The driver’s confidence in his choice was based on data gathered during practice, which showed good performance from the Ferrari in terms of tire degradation.

Regarding the overall performance of his car, Leclerc emphasized that, despite its strength during the race, qualifying remains a weakness for the team. ‘Our speed was competitive on long runs during practice, but in qualifying, we are not achieving the desired performance,’ he added. This situation raises questions about whether Ferrari can transform its qualifying situation without sacrificing race speed.

Although Leclerc ended up third on the grid for the race, his future performance depends on a good delivery in the next stage. ‘I want to stay in the fight for the podium throughout the season, and today I made decisions to maximize my options during the race,’ Leclerc concluded.
